People of the future might think that we deliberately messed up the hands of AI-generated people
  • TranquilTurbulence TranquilTurbulence 16h ago 100%

But what if there’s some sort of nuclear/zombie/robot/alien-apocalypse which results in tremendous data loss. Maybe a thousand years from now a future archeologist wonders why there are so many cursed pictures from a particular era. That might be a deeply unsettling mystery until someone finds an ancient research document about image generating AI. However, if nobody finds that document, the archeologists might just go with the traditional “ritual purposes” explanation.

  • If a planet was completely covered in water, wouldn't it all be freshwater?
  • TranquilTurbulence TranquilTurbulence 16h ago 93%

Water and salts are a package deal. If you have a planet with one, you’re going to have all the others as well, because they all come from an exploding star.

When a star goes supernova, it creates oxygen, which can later combine with hydrogen to make water. That very same supernova also makes sodium, potassium, magnesium, chlorine, sulfur etc. so you end up with all the elements for making a bunch of different salts. Ask physicists why supernova does this sort of packaging.

My bank account seems to be pretty big. No matter how much money I throw in there, I never seem to run out of space. As far as I’m concerned, it’s infinite.

I guess, eventually there will be some sort of limitation and the bank gives you a call to tell you that this is a personal account not meant for managing the cash flow of an entire country. Until then, we’re all good, and I’m going to think my account is infinite.

  • Pasteurization means that most commercially sold milk is technically Evaporated Milk.
  • TranquilTurbulence TranquilTurbulence 3d ago 100%

Let me introduce you to the concept of vapor pressure. The volatility of a material depends on the temperature. Even cold water will still evaporate slowly. Instead is being a binary things, the vapor pressure will increase gradually as the temperature increases.

This means, that you can empty a glass of water by just waiting. You don’t even need to boil the water to make it evaporate. It’s already evaporating very slowly, even in room temperature.

Therefore, raw milk straight from the udder, is also evaporated milk.

Winamp source code was published on github, but the license said you can’t fork or share the code. Such a license isn’t compatible with github, which is all about forking and sharing.

Based on the article, this is a train wreck of cosmic proportions. My guess is, the CEO panicked and went into damage mitigation mode.

Sounds like they’re trying to put out a titanium fire using only a bucket of water. What could go wrong.

Yeah, those services can be really expensive, so justifying expenses like that might be hard in a small project.

And if you decide to use an LLM, don’t settle for the first version. Ask thoughtful questions, request relevant improvements, and spend some time with this document. The first version tends to have a bunch of flaws, mistakes and oversights, and the LLM might even be able to find and fix them if you tell it to do that. After a few iterations of ironing out the wrinkles, you should show the document to a real lawyer just in case.

When you start studying a topic like this, you need to define some terms clearly. For example, if hackers grab your passwords, is that a breach in privacy, security or both? If Google is stalking you and knows your every move, desire and plan, what does that violate?

Once you have clear definitions for these things, it would be more helpful to see how different browsers compare on this scale.

  • While I was in the shower, I thought of a brilliant idea! Let’s trigger several smaller volcanic eruptions that release a semi-controlled amount of volcanic ash into other atmosphere. That will cool down the atmosphere, which should buy us some time to fix our carbon emissions. Then I realized, that doing so would block visible light. Plants need the light to grow, and we need the plants to breathe and eat. Obviously, this is not going to be a long term solution. Oh, and how do you even make sure the volcanic eruption doesn’t spiral out of control and suddenly spew out 50 times the ash we were aiming for. Oh, and volcanoes also spew CO2 and even nastier gases, so… It sounded so good while I was still in the shower. The more I think about it, the worse it gets.
