Oh yeah, I don't have an issue with them ruining their devices. I just have them locked down because I don't want them to have free use on the internet. So much mindrot on there...

I'm very happy my 12y old kid can't just sideload shit nilly willy. He legit Googles minecraft hacks and downloads random apks and stuff if he gets the chance)
(his phone is also fully locked down with parental because a 12y old should have free reign on the internet, but that's beside the point)

I work for a large eu government agency. Why the hell they still insist that we promote our workings on Twitter completely eludes me. It does not make any sense whatsoever. They should get off and stop promoting that cesspool. Go to any of the myriad of competitors or just go back to Facebook and Instagram...

Really? Been using a logitech trackball at work for 14 years now. My k750 keyboard lasted me almost 10y until the battery completely gave up and I wanted to upgrade. My Mx keys has lasted me for years since.
Similar stories for my mice, none of them have failed, I've only upgraded because I wanted lighter, more/less buttons or for other reasons.

Trump is an absolute POS, but if you look at the full speech, this seems to be what the actual speech was about. Getting them to vote just this one time.
But he's running for president and words matter. Good for dems to press him on that

Ofcourse not, I also use fdroid and I sideload a shitton of apps. But Google is not killing off alternate stores, they're just making their store safer. My whole point is that this change is not that negative. If anything it'll have a positive effect on non tech savvy users. It'll save me time by potentially causing less issues on the devices of family members.

That final part isn't really Google's fault no? But just the devs cutting functions?

Yeah, I read it. Didn't think much of it. Are those apps that common? Don't use them, as my browser can read pdf and text files.
Sounds more like some fringe apps will get caught in the cross hairs. Still sounds like a good change for the average end user. For the average power user, it won't make a difference imo.

I mean, I know lemmy has an open source hardon and hates anything walled, but is this really such a bad thing? Google is getting rid of a bunch of shitty apps and risky apps. Nothing is stopping you from still sideloading them if you really need them.
I really fail to see the actual issue aside from "google bad"
I'm traveling to the US mainland for the first time in my life in a few weeks. I am not overly stressed about privacy, but I have read that US immigration can really overstep their boundaries. Are there any simple specific steps to take on my devices to protect my privace when going through US border control? Remove my main accounts from my phone/tablet and use dummy accounts? Or just removing my biometrics?

Fair enough. I'm raising my kids in a similar fashion. I dislike the sexual repression in the west (from which I unconsciously still suffer). But I'm still worried about other boys :)

Until your daughter comes home with a boyfriend with a fucked up sense of what sex is and ruins her day/week/month/year/life.
I'm certainly not pro government tracking anything I do, let alone porn watching, but if I see how my own kids get exposed to it through friends. No matter how much I try to educate them, friends still show them absolute vile stuff...

What's the last time you met a gatherer doing it as a profession and not a hobby?
Hunters are a little bit more common, but still, full time food hunters are rare.
Prostitutes on the other hand.
So as a simple saying used in a daily life, I can kinda see why it's used :)

How often does that happen that you recognize this? I can't remember the last time I hit my head hard enough that it hurt, let alone hard enough to black out for a second.
Is this a common occurance for most people?

Is that the real reason? Or because it's a) safer for the shop (no cash on hand) and b) much simpler for the staff (no counting money, figuring out change etc...)
Not everything is purely about being evil you know....

Afaik the idea is that you want to avoid someone to be able to convict their opponents. So make it impossible to take them out using the legal system. Makes total sense to me.
I love the content posted here. As someone that has recently started dabbling in AI image Gen, it would be an amazing learning tool to see a) which model was used to generate the image and b) which prompt was given. With a) being most interesting imo. Is there any reason this is not required? (hope it's OK to post this here, didn't see anything in the rules about it)
