As fas as the mainstream media (M5M) are concerned, ham radio doesn’t exist. All I’ve heard about are heroic efforts to distribute Starlink terminals.

As past FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, KK4INZ, said in Ham Radio Now Emcomm Extra #8, when an incident occurs “they just want their email to work.”

This appeared on Facebook regarding the IT situation over at the ARRL: This was reported by Chris NW6V Mike Ritz, W7VO, ARRL 2nd Vice President, was at the WVDXC club meeting last night, having just attended an ARRL board meeting to discuss the outage. Mike reported those meetings are a weekly event until the matter is resolved. Everything that was running on INTERNAL servers is down until further notice. That includes their VoIP phone system, their .org email addresses, and front ends for things like LOTW. Everything running on external servers - cloud servers etc. - including LOTW data, is believed unaffected. But, such data will not be available until the internal matters are resolved. Thus, "joe@arrl.org" doesn't work - because that was on their internal mail server. But "joe@arrl.net" does - because the relays didn't run internally. I checked, and NW6V@ARRL.NETworks. Efforts to restore the internal systems is proceeding full-time. No time-line can be given. The nature of the problem cannot be discussed. I believe Mike said - with air asterisks around his words - "We have been advised to say nothing." He responded similarly when asked if "the Feds" were investigating this. **READ MORE:** https://w2lj.blogspot.com/2024/05/interesting-speculation.html

if your club sucks, contribute and make it better!

That's an idiotic, and more than a little bit insulting, kneejerk response.

You have no idea what I do for my club.

Amateur Radio is a niche hobby full of niches; most of them require a radio. Here's one list of things you can do with/in Amateur Radio:

Clubs are highly overrated. They are only beneficial if your interests in Amateur Radio coincide with a sizable segment of the club membership or with the club's purpose. In my case our club is `primarily a social outlet for disheveled old folks who are only interested in DXing and contests; not my cup of tea.

  • On Thursday, January 18th, I discovered that the Winlink APRSLink callsign is now WLNK rather than WLNK-1. Here's how ... My APRSLink login attempt through WLNK-1 (over VHF) failed so I switched to APRSDroid (over TCP/IP) to rule out an iGate/digi issue. When I started APRSDroid I received a "message waiting" notice from WLNK instead of the expected WLNK-1. So I sent my APRS messages to WLNK and was able to login over both VHF and TCP/IP. This callsign change has **not** been mentioned at https://winlink.org/APRSLink

seems awesome for recreational and emergency communication.

Can we please stop using "emergency communication" as a badge of worthiness?

Link addresses to remote sites must start with either the protocol (e.g. "http://") or a double slash.

Otherwise your browser will prepend the current hostname and, in the case of relative addresses, the current path. See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24028561/ddg#24028813 for a discussion of absolute vs relative addresses.

Thats very nice! And I'm quite jealous of what they're able to accomplish.

Our club can barely come up with enough VHF voice net operators to staff less than 20 marathon aid stations. Technologies such as APRS are an anathema in our group of luddites.
