These sources aren't great. A book from 1969 is one of them. I would've assumed DNA sequencing had already confirmed which one our ancestry and genome is more closely related to.

If we branched away from one 700 million years ago, and the other 800 million years ago, then it's more like "potato potatoe".

I've always felt this way about tankies and the horseshoe theory in general. Conservatism spawned from the "Bourgeoise"; all the religious lords and landowners who profited from, and supported, monarchs and authoritarian rule. Tankie belief systems align with that "bourgeoise" perfectly.

The concept of authoritarian socialism is a contradiction. Without democracy, freedom of thought, and freedom of person — from fear of retribution for wrongthink — the workers never had a say; never "seized" control of anything. Tankies are nothing more than a continuation of the authoritarian rule that came before them. Both Hitler and Trump have said they represent the wprking class. Saying you represent the working class is meaningless. You need to prove it with your actions.

Ultimately tankies are closer to the Tsars, Kings, and colonialism they replaced, than they are to the concept of freedom and equality for the working class. They just want to be the oppressor, and probably believe that communism is the best chance they have to ever be in a position to fulfil that role.

I too am intrigued why tankies would support islamic fundamentalists murdering leftist french journalists... Doesn't add up... My only guess (beyond the general mental illness tankies display) is that French colonialism fucked up cultures around the world for centuries — across south America, Africa, and Asia — and they still hold political and military control over a few of them... But why cheer islamic terrorism? Why cheer the murder of leftist journos?

Those are both edits to existing replies where I was trying to be an asshole, AFTER I could no longer reply and received a ban message. Why Lemmy would let a banned user edit historic comments I dunno.

I can't seem to view my OG comment in my own history or modlog, or any of them prior to editing. The most asshole the OG comment got was "your bravado is reckless and dumb af", but still got like 95% / 40+ downvotes from a user base who believe nuclear war is a joke. It's the first time I've bothered using the modlog, and as a feature that was touted for its transparency it's honestly not much better than reddit. Can't even seem to view the mod who made the decision.

I can't figure out how to view my own reply comment anymore, but a /Ukraine user [commented this insanity](https://sh.itjust.works/comment/14412127) and I called them out — that cornering a sociopathic nuclear armed dictator is recklessly stupid, and exactly what will trigger a nuclear war — and got massively downvoted for "enabling Russia". 90% of the user base agreed with "conquering" Russia, and thought previous mini incursions across the border are equivalent; proving that nukes are a forever bluff. The best part? After inspecting several of the mods and users comment histories I realized all seem to have nothing to do with Ukraine whatsoever, and appear to be young pro-war machine North American jarheads (or keyboard warrior wannabes), who sub to or mod numerous other military related communities.

Accurate, except Lemmy mods are more the shittiest tankies/libs of Reddit. The vast majority of conservatives don't seem to have come here; probably to truth social, 4chan, and other established strongholds where they don't have to ever see opposing opinions.

IMO the "replicate reddit, but decentralized" approach will be the downfall of Lemmy. You sound like you're trying to do the right thing, but there is significantly more moderator centralization and authoritarianism on Lemmy than there was on early reddit. Most of the early reddit mods were people who genuinely had an interest or experience in that subs topic; not the tankie or excommunicated from elsewhere simply "domain squatting" dozens of popular community names and then dictating over them once they grew popular; trying to carve out their own personal safe space soap boxes. I have seen dozens of mods who'll debate someone and when they lose they just delete all of the opposing comments and ban the user they disagree with. Often they are the one and only mod of that community.

Users left Reddit because they didn't wanna have to deal with continued enshittification and unaccountable bad faith mods on a power trip. Lemmy only solved the former, and doubled down on the latter, while fragmenting users across numerous duplicate communities about the same topic; leading to significant post duplication amongst a sea of inactive duplicate communities.

If Lemmy doesn't solve its core issues I don't expect it to last long and will move elsewhere sooner than later. I feel like users should be able to join a group of communities about the same topic, and moderator control should be both diluted and distributed amongst them. As in, redistribute moderation across the user base by randomly showing a group of users a post/comment and using the average rather than relying on whoever created the sub to act in good faith. Decentralized services should be built as trustless/adversarial; expect and account for bad faith actors. I wouldn't have any problem being required to moderate a post/comment for every post/comment I make, I just don't want the responsibility of being a permanent mod, nor having to review every single thing myself.

Just another example of how judicial systems are run by ignorant dinosaurs who don't understand how anything works (e.g. series of tubes). You'd expect a judge presiding over this type of case to make a ruling after seeking advice from domain experts; on what was in the realm of possibility.

If Google were motivated to do this voluntarily, I'd expect it to be a 6-12 month project, at the very least.

Well obviously. It was 40k months ago, and that was merely a conservative estimate. The real death toll is definitely well over 100k if you include all the civilians Israel has intentionally starved and deprived of medical care.

The Democrats are just as much a front for the shadow plutocracy that finances 90% of candidates at the state and federal level.

The only difference is one is a continuation of the "democracy" charade, while the other rips the mask off and officially kills it.

I just tried on the web and the only option is to create their custom doc format.

I don't want a custom intermediary format. I want to create and edit txt and md files — the thing you can do on every platform. They've had an E2EE client-side txt and html editor in mail for a decade. At the very least, these 2 should have been available on release of drive.

Broke timestamps. Everywhere. New replies will show "10 hrs" while the original comment will show "18 mins". When viewing posts I see tons of phantom comments that seemingly have nothing to do with the post or are replying to something when they appear at the top level. Navigating to the post in a web browser shows dozens more comments (not from users I've blocked or anything). Formatting of content across posts and comments doesn't match what the site does when I view it in the browser. Thanks to the Memmy dev and any contributors, but broken software is broken software. So, what's the best alternative these days?
