Seeking feedback: how should lemm.ee move forward with external images? (related to frequent broken images)

I believe just passing through external images is the way to go, it's always the one I opt for if I can

Hosting those images is gonna get expensive and that kinda sucks for a donation run platform when that money could be far better spent elsewhere

I think also using external image sources is more in line with the idea of decentralisation, Lemmy isn't an image host it's a link aggregator and forum - I believe most image hosting sites will be far better at loading images quickly than Lemmy's implementation could ever be

As a vegetarian I would not infact hurt a fly or anything that isn't directly posing a threat to me, at least not intentionally

At the point of microbes and bacteria I draw the line I suppose but then microbes are less sentient than plants are and killing them is unavoidable

A solution could be removing the concept of moderators in general, make reports work like down votes and make a user and instance configurable threshold for how many reports until a comment is hidden by default

(Users could still see that there are messages there and choose to unhide them kinda like how discord does blocks)

Go to the developer section, there should be instructions there

They keep changing the layout of their website so idk at the moment, you basically need a developer account and need to put an amount of credit on your account, you might get some free to start

I'd try installing just regular nix (package manager, not operating system) rather than home manager, that's what I do on by Debian pi

There's an install script on their website that does it all for you

No point imo, the people who benefit significantly from using Linux are the people who understand what it is

I try to get my techy friends on Linux and much of my family are techies anyway but I wouldn't try to put someone who won't be able to fix it themselves on it because then they're stuck if I'm not around to fix it

Does home manager work standalone without having nix first? I've never installed it on non-nixos

Nix shell is absolutely for running packages without installing them it literally tells you to do that in the terminal hint

Nix run iirc only works with flakes

Only thing better than perfect is standard as they say, if everything uses the same shortcuts it doesn't matter if they're crap

I've kept most of the same logic from windows keybinds on my hyprland config because then when I have to use a windows machine it's not completely backwards

I literally used this as an example to demonstrate gaming on Linux is easy now

Works perfectly out of the box, all you gotta do is install steam, download it and click play

If you can install nix (you can install it per user) then you can have whatever you want in a temporary shell with nix-shell -p python

nix profile install nixpkgs#python if you want it actually installed

Home manager is also entirely user level I believe and lets you use a declarative config too

  • Have been keeping half an eye on framework laptops as a potential next daily driver as and when I'm ready for one. Just wondering what people's experience of using them on linux has been, particularly nixos I'm assuming all the drivers are in the kernel given the way the company is Have been using a 2016 thinkpad for the past year or so and have had a decent experience with it, with the way lenovo have gone with their newer thinkpads it seems like framework is now the best for maintainability/upgradability (not planning to upgrade in the immediate future as this machine is doing fine, but frameworks are a strong contender in my mind right now and I'm curious as to people's experience)

I kinda like the look of them and often feel myself wanting a second monitor if I'm working on my laptop. (I've come to the conclusion if people think I'm working I won't look like as much of a massive dork) Always had the feeling they'd be a bit crap though, like the hinges break or the monitor isn't too good or it's big and bulky and you can't really carry it Ideally I'd like to find a single fold out side monitor that attaches to my laptop (big chunky ThinkPad) somehow and doesn't need its own power supply but that may be asking too much

Saw an advert for [this](https://supernote.com/pages/supernote-nomad) thing, in theory it looks pretty good (repairable e-ink tablet) but I'm a little confused by their statement that it will at some point in the future run a linux based operatint system "A Linux-based system will be open in the future for community modifications and customizations. *Not built-in with the device" I guess this probably means it's not actually as open as they claim if you can't just put mainline Linux/android on it but thought I'd ask here cause in theory it seems like a neat tablet

I've heard cosmic is in the process of being packaged for nix, but on the tracking issue the only things not complete are the video player and the app store, neither of which I care about Is there any halfway sensible way to get the bits that do work running on nixos? Would quite like to try this desktop out

I've got this idea in my head that I want a tofi based sound board that I can summon on a button press (and maybe fuzzy find through) Should be fairly simple to do with the way tofi works to make the interface, but as far as I can find there's not a quick and easy way to mix sounds in with mic input using pactl Is there any single line solution for playing a sound over mic (like a soundboard would) anyone can think of or do I need to mess around with virtual audio devices to achieve this

There's a video on YouTube where someone has managed to train a network of rat neurons to play doom, the way they did it seems reminiscent of how we train ML models I am under the impression from the video that real neurons are a lot better at learning than simulated ones (and much less power demanding) Could any ML problems, such as natural language generation be solved using neurons instead and would that be in any way practical? Ethically at this point is this neuron array considered conscious in any way?

Often find myself getting frustrated editing yaml, and it seems to be used everywhere for some reason I cannot fathom I have an idea to write an editor plugin that will, when opening a yaml file, convert it to json (or some other less painful configuration language), then convert back on save. I don't know enough about yaml syntax to know if that's possible or if there's some quirk that makes them not completely cross compatible Or alternatively if it exists a better CLI tool for editing yaml than just a normal text editor because I'm getting sick of pasting in a block of yaml and then having to fix the 8 indentation errors that somehow spawn from that

Not sure if what I'm looking for exists, but thought I'd ask. I like the boss fights of games like sekiro and and dark souls but I always end up getting bored of them before getting particularly far for one reason or another I'm not a huge fan of the grungey art style most souls likes seem to adopt, and I often find myself wandering around not really knowing where I'm going, what I'm doing, or why I'm doing it Really loved the Nier series. The combat in that makes you feel like a badass, whereas souls likes tend to make your character look like a regular guy with a sword (which I get is the point but not what I tend to look for) Also like the visual style of black desert, the combat feels pretty good and looks very cool though I'm not a fan of all the micro transactions and pay to win (more or less the same goes for Warframe, at least when I played it years ago) Does anyone know of any games that might scratch that itch, don't necessarily have to be souls likes as long as they look good and have challenging boss fights

Just googled to see if there was an activitypub git host yet and came across [this](https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/development/activitypub/) claiming gitlab are working on it at the moment and that it's available as an experimental feature Seems odd to me that people aren't talking about this more here, has anyone tried it and if so is it any good?

Thought I'd test the waters and see what kinds of phones people on here are using nowadays and what for, what features set them apart if any etc Bonus points if anyone's managed to get mainline linux running on them either via KVM or bare metal Edit: Thanks for everyone who talked about their choices of phone, I am now writing this on a fairphone 4 and am quite happy with it so far.

Does anyone know of a mod that, given the seed for example, could locally generate chunks so that they can be displayed before the server generates them? IE if multiple people are exploring and the server's struggling to keep up, it would be awesome if the client could generate them locally and fill in the gaps locally until the server gets around to generating them proper (Kinda like how I imagine distant horizons does it)

I'm hearing a lot about websites like netflix and YouTube crippling their performance in some way if you're using firefox instead of chrome/a smart TV Is it likely to cause me problems if I just globally change my useragent to chrome instead of firefox? Alternatively, is there an extension that automatically bypasses all of these things that people are aware of (pretends to be a smart TV for netflix, chrome for YouTube, etc automatically) If there's not an extension, what would be involved in making one? Obviously user agent changes dependant on URL but I'm not sure what other metrics these websites might be able to use to figure out what you're using

I am potentially going to be able to put Linux on my work PC soon, have been using it on my personal PC and laptop quite happily with hyprland ontop of NixOS Thinking of using NixOS for my work machine as well, however I don't want to use hyprland or even Wayland as I need this machine to be stable and reliable (Nvidia GPU) Is I3 still the best option for this or are there better alternatives? (leaning towards I3 ontop of KDE) I'm also somewhat tempted to just go GNOME with the forge extension as it seems the most reliable, though the tiling on that extension is far from perfect

Whenever I hear about D&D more often than not it seems like people go to great lengths to stay in character and roleplay This is great and makes for some very interesting stories but I tend to find myself more interested in just going on an adventure with a group of friends, solve a few puzzles win a few fights, complete a few quests etc I'm also a big fan of character optimisation and mechanics but get the feeling that can be frowned upon by much of the community Difficult to describe what I mean here but as an example in baldur's gate I barely roleplay at all, my character has no personality except for the fact they make the decisions I would make, but I find that more fun, not having to worry about what my character would do and just making the decision I want to make I realise not having a fleshed out character in D&D detracts from the immersiveness of the story because the DM can't weave your character into the story but at least at the moment that doesn't sound too bad to me. Just wondering if there are people out there who run lighter roleplay campaigns

What's everyone's thoughts on how baldur's gate handles areas you're not allowed to short rest? I get that it adds to the challenge to have to conserve resources but up until moonrise towers the game has let us long rest when and where we please My friend and I have been burning through spell slots like nobody's business because when we start to run low on health and short rests we just throw everything we have at finishing a fight thinking we're going to long rest afterwards, only to be realise we can't and now have to fight through the remaining areas with no spell slots Would be nice if the game warned you when you were entering an area you wouldn't be able to long rest so we'd know to be a bit more conservative with resource usage and I feel like this is going to be a pattern going forward Tl;Dr don't mind not being able to long rest in certain areas but would be nice to have a heads up

I've read a book a few years ago where there are these two countries, one is really cold and one is really hot The countries are at war, and the people from the hot country have magic while the cold country have good technology The main character grows up in the hot country and ends up in the cold one, I think because she was conscripted and sent as a spy Because her body is acclimated to the really hot country she can't stand the cold and has to use magic to keep herself warm (seem to remember her using her long hair to channel it underneath a wetsuit at some point ::: spoiler Potential Spoilers The main character ends up falling in love with a soldier from the cold country, and as far as I recall they end up getting shunned by both ::: I'm fairly certain someone I know would love this book but I can't find it for the life of me, does it ring any bells for anyone?

Obviously nobody in their right mind is using BSD for gaming but I do wonder how it would show up I heard there was a bsd port of steam at some point and some people got the Linux build working on it. I have to assume the Linux build would probably report as Linux unless it has some mechanism to determine operating system besides it being hard coded Having 1% of my playtime be on BSD seems like a pretty good meme to me

Work have started trying out signal for messaging, but I'd rather not have all my personal contacts and conversations on a machine I don't own Is there any way I could white/black list certain contacts from one device, or is the only way to manage two separate accounts? (If so, is there an easy/built in way to do that on windows/nixos)
