My views are based on data from my own country. If that situation is that bad in Los Estados Unidos then leave. In my country the average lecturer salary is a bit over £40k per year which is above the average UK salary for all age groups. That again is for lecturers which are not the same as professors.

You still haven't said what their salary actually is, just vaguely talked about hourly rates. Shouldn't most lectures be full time employees? Are you saying most lectures aren't full time in your country?

Edit: In the UK we actually have a dedicated visa for people with certain skills and qualifications like your academics. So if you wanted to move here you probably could: https://www.gov.uk/global-talent-researcher-academic

If this is Los Estados Unidos then it's not surprising something is wrong. I still sincerely doubt what these guys are saying though. I suspect a lot of them either mismanaged their money badly or are just straight up lying. Nobody would work in academia in that country if things were that bad at every University.

See this actually makes sense, but it is also entirely their own fault. You should only ever do a PhD if you're getting paid to do it by being sponsored by a company or from a scholarship fund. That's how I ended up doing my PhD. The kinds of people taking our loans to become a PhD probably shouldn't be doing a PhD in the first place. It's not like an undergraduate degree.

I am telling you that even people further down in the hierarchy make good money. Either your academics are lying to you (which wouldn't suprise me people are fucking greedy) or something has gone very wrong in your country. If we are talking about American it's probably both of those things.

Yes except lecturers also make bank.

The only people not making good money are the PhD students who also teach. Even then most of us I think get more money than the undergraduates.

Even I as a student get something like £19,000 a year plus £40 per hour teaching rate for any classes I teach.

Either these people are manipulating you or there is something very wrong with academia in your country. Luckily moving countries is quite easy for academics as many Universities will hire foreign staff and there are often immigration laws in place for these kinds of people.

In what world or country are professors not making enough to afford somewhere to live? In my country professors make good money despite the fact that tenure doesn't really exist here. It's one of the highest ranks you can have in academia above lecturer, senior lecturer, and reader.

I live in Europe, in a country that still has its problems. The truth is though it's not just us. There are less deaths from war and less poverty throughout the world in general if you actually look at the statistics. This is despite all the bad things you see in the news. The modern news and internet make people more aware of the bad in the world, when the truth is things are actually getting better overall.

Honestly if you are that worried about updates breaking stuff, you might be better off using an immutable distro. These work using images and/or snapshots so it's easy to rollback if something goes wrong. It's also just less likely to go wrong as you aren't upgrading individual packages as much, but rather the base system as a whole. Both Fedora and Open Suse have atomic/immutable variants with derivatives like Universal Blue providing ready to go setups for specific use cases like gaming and workstation use.

Alternatively the likes of Debian rarely break because of updates as everything is thoroughly tested before deployment. Gentoo and void are the same deal but in rolling release format so they are at least somewhat up to date while still being quite well tested.

Yeah unfortunately this is a real issue. I also think it's an issue that experienced users don't really want to help newbies, especially those who can't or won't do research by themselves. Ideally experienced users would be more helpful, but at the same time that isn't their job. There are many who learned Linux more or less on their own so it's understandable they don't want to help given they didn't use any help when it was their turn. I think now that the community is growing this might start to change a bit, as the newcomers are more likely to have had help and be willing to help others.

I sometimes try to advocate for using Linux, and I don't mind giving friends advice from time to time. That being said I don't want to be stuck answering stupid questions all the time that could have been solved with a google search or a YouTube video. I have my own stuff to worry about both technical and otherwise.

That's why I think teaching new users how to access resources like man pages, gnu info pages, google, and so on is the correct approach to take. It is empowering having the skills to work through your own issues. That being said I also think it's important for experienced people to give advice on more complex questions.

Stainless steel pans are amazing when used for the right purpose. They weigh much less than cast iron, don't require any maintenance beside cleaning them, and they are pretty much indestructible. If you burn something badly you can use metal scowering pads or any chemical you damn well like (including sodium hydroxide that will melt flesh) to get the thing clean again. They are tolerant to any cooking temperature you would ever use, ever. You can't overheat one with any appliance a normal kitchen would have. This means you can easily pop one in the oven provided it has a metal handle.

The only issue being they have no non-stick properties to speak of and relatively little thermal mass. This is good in that they don't need long to heat up, but bad in that it's not a consistent temperature and you have to know what you are doing with the power control to get the results you want. This means it's essentially useless for cooking things like steak, and difficult even to cook an omelet without using a lot of butter, ghee, or oil. Things like tomato sauces though? Perfect. The stainless steel could care less about the acidity.

Also another serious question: why the fuck are you trying to demonize an anxiety disorder? In fact while I am here why are you trying to demonize personality disorders caused ultimately by childhood trauma?

I can understand making the argument that someone with NPD doesn't belong in medicine for safety reasons. But anxiety disorders? Really? How is that going to impact their performance? Surely someone with anxiety is more likely to double or triple check things that others would miss.

First off I am in England in the UK, so that's the medical system I would probably be using. I've had significant issues with executive function throughout my life, but especially in the last two years of my integrated masters degree. This includes organization, as well as staying focused. I've had issues with losing things, multitasking, procrastinating, racing thoughts, and other issues in the other areas of life as well. I am thinking of going back to do a PhD or starting my first full time job, and am worried that I will really struggle this time. I got a diagnosis of Asperger's before you could officially have a dual diagnosis under the DSM. So even though some of initial paperwork said I had significant evidence of ADHD, I couldn't actually be diagnosed with both so I guess Asperger's took precedence. This all happened when I was like 4 or 5 years old. I am thinking medications or maybe therapy might be helpful, but I don't know if I need the second diagnosis to get those. From what I understand the NHS (UK public health system) has long wait times, and going private might be expensive. Additionally going to a psychologist, and talking about stuff with my family seems scary. Additionally I have issues with sleeping and waking that probably won't help get all of this organized, and I probably need to get this addressed too. I understand that both ASD and ADHD can cause sleep issues, so maybe getting treatment for those would help. Sorry for the long post. I hope this is also the right community for this as I wasn't sure where to post this. Edit: I also have hyperfixation/hyperfocus/special interests out the waazoo, but I didn't know if this was relevant as that's also a part of having autism.

Is there a way to move distro without loosing data in /home? I am currently running Pop OS and want to move to Nix OS while keeping the data. Normally I could use an external hard drive or my server, but most of my equipment is in storage at the moment. Current partition setup is using LUKS and LVM with ext4. I am guessing there is a way to manipulate the LVM to make it work by adding another partition and installing into it. I know this is probably a convoluted idea. I am trying to avoid spending money an another external drive.

I have been having issues using real debrid. One of the big issues is downloads getting stuck continuously retrying. I think this is because I am using 5G internet that has issues with latency and occasional packet loss. Similarly I get buffering issues when using Stremio. Another problem I am having is with the permission set by the real debrid client if I use the docker version. It doesn't allow for changing the UID and GID the real debrid process uses. This causes problems for the other services, though I can work around this using a manual installation in an LXC container. Does anyone with more experience know how to fix this? Edit: I can't edit the title to fix the spelling. You will just have to deal. Edit2: Fixed the permission issues. Also managed to work out that the problem isn't 5G. The download client is just bad. Apparently you can use external downloaders, but this requires deploying services like aria2c, which it turns out is actually quite hard.

I am a bit lost as to how you use authentik to do single sign on. I can connect things that have external access quite easily using the reverse proxy provider that's built into authentik. I am struggling with how I would connect things that are on a docker network and can't be accessed directly. Normally with nginx proxy manager I would put it on the same network, but I don't think this is correct for authentik. Am I supposed to create a docker outpost? Other people are using authentik + nginx proxy manager and I am a bit lost why they are doing that.

I am currently living with my parents and we have just started an Internet contract with a 5G wireless company. The issue is the MFND settings are behind a password and likely not allowed access by the ISP. Even if they weren't doing port forwarding on 5G likely isn't possible because of CGNAT. I think I can use cloudflare tunnels or tailscale to get around this, and not many things need to be directly accessible from the Internet. The more annoying thing is that setting DHCP reservations likely isn't possible without getting access to the settings. It's going to make setting up static IPs difficult too. Before anyone asks fixed line Internet almost certainly isn't practical in this area. Getting our own modem while possible is more expensive and potentially difficult, and would mean cancelling the contract. Is there a reasonable way to work around these issues? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I have some probably dumb questions to ask about marxism and wasn't sure where to go. Is there like a ask marxists or debate marxists forum? Anyway What and how many branches of marxism want state socialism during the socialist transition period before Communism? I was under the impression that all (or most) leninists wanted state socialism during this period. I have since been told that Trotskyists don't want this. Is this correct if so what do they want instead? How does this all relate to vanguardism? Furthermore how does marxism define a state? Is this different from how other groups define statehood? I still don't fully grasp the difference between marxists and anarchists. I thought the difference was mainly that anarchists don't want a state, and encourage mutual aid. Now that I hear not all marxists want a state I am pretty confused.

Chinese ROMs come without support for many languages. Even when using English there are still things which are in Chinese. The people selling the devices on AliExpress are selling then with a "global rom". The issue here is that the rom doesn't exist officially. So no updates are available and you don't know what's actually inside it. xiaomi.eu provide a modified version of the Chinese rom with language support and some other things. The issue is they charge for this through patreon for any mediatek devices. You have to keep paying if you want security updates. This is immoral and probably illegal as they don't own MIUI or Android and copyleft is designed to prevent this kind of thing. To add insult to injury they started offering some mediatek roms for free. When people stopped paying the patreon they removed them from the download sites. Shame on them and shame on the AliExpress sellers. If anyone knows a good course on building android roms and reverse engineering them let me know. Maybe I can fix this situation.
