Depending on what part of it interests you, there are other, cheaper ways to engage with the hobby.
On the painting/modelling side, you can get 3d prints, recasts, or minis for other game systems. The cheapest are probably generic minis from Reaper or WizKids; the base crab model I painted is $4.50USD on Reaper's site, for instance.
On the playing the game side, you can buy Tabletop Simulator on Steam and play 40k online. It's a bit janky, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper ($10 for TTS on sale vs several hundred for physical). There should be other players online, probably in discord servers, not all of whom will be nazis. Some people even made a coop "horde mode" that uses a simple flow-chart for the "AI" opposition so you could solo play if you wanted to.
Having a group is definitely the biggest hurdle to get over, though. I'm just lucky that I had a few friends that all decided to start 40k at the same time.

Extremely understandable, I play the game but it's not great.
Just wanting to paint and collect is unfortunately a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you don't need to paint 30 basic infantry, which is good since they aren't very interesting, but on the other, most of the discount boxes come with those boring basic infantry, and GW is notorious for their ridiculous markups on the prices for heroes.

Nope, it's one of the "Mummy Sandkings" by Reaper minis. The crab ("Dire Crab" on their site) is also from them. Got them in a Kickstarter a few years ago, figured I'd get some use out've them.

Ty, the new Inquisitorial Agent kit has its problems (you need 2 sets for a full Kill Team meaning you'll have dupes, their stats are real bad in 40k), but the models you get are perfect for representing an eclectic bunch of weirdos.

IIRC some of the inner sphere powers are pretty patriarchal? I recall there being noble houses with political marriages, which were meant to evoke medieval european ones, and most rulers being men which implies male succession.

I think that's community defense in this analogy.
Everybody knows that the american civic religion places a lot of emphasis on our "democracy" as it exists, so we should set up something that will let people in the politics fandom get all of the excitement out of their system without actually getting in the way of important governing decisions. The actual elections will be on entirely separate dates with minimal fanfare. The show elections will have the non-stop campaigning and press events everyone's used to, but nobody elected will have any political power. On MSM talkshows and the like, they'll only be allowed to talk about things happening on the fake side of things. Mentioning _real_ politics will carry a penalty of having to sort rocks in a quarry (or similar task in regions lacking sufficient rocks) for 1 hour per time mentioned. In terms of subjects, they can argue over whether we're abolishing the value form too quickly or too slowly, or if outdoor cats should be legal. They'll constantly go on about national unity and how we're too divided while agreeing about 99% of things.

A 2 hour long video on the themes of Khorne and Chaos as false consciousness opposed to revolutionary violence? Yes, I think I _will_ watch this while eating leftover pizza for breakfast.
Seems like there aren't a lot of typical Elden Ring dungeons, just overworld stuff and then bigger dungeons for the more important bosses. Performance is _really_ bad so far. Died to the Parade Lion while it was at 1HP, Freja secured the kill just before I timed out, hell yeah, I'll take it.
Slowly working my way through a _BUNCH_ of vehicles and finally decided to bite the bullet and do the camo. Still a lot of work to go, but this is a huge jump in terms of _looking_ done. Masking tape took 8x longer to put on than actually painting did. As someone new to an airbrush, I must say that it's definitely faster and smoother than using a brush, but I really need to improve my aim. There's some nasty overspray in various places which is going to have to be touched up by hand, but I'm generally very happy with this.
RIP to a real one

Title. Just for walking around. Looking for something waterproof so I can wear them in rain or maybe light snow. Last time I bought some new balance sneakers and they're full of cracks and tearing apart at the seams after a little over a year. I hate that everything is designed to fail immediately 
Hasn't been one of these in a while.  Really gotta wonder why they were lying about the fire devil being the justice devil if public safety has the devil namer. How many chapters can Fujimoto stretch the Yoshida/Asa fight? My money's on another five.
And had a pretty good time! Definitely seemed shorter than our games of 40k at around 2.5 hours, even though it was our first game. Tried using 9e Tempest of War missions which was probably a mistake as most of them don't make sense with alternating activations lol (and my opponent was guaranteed victory when he drew Raise Banner, Secure No Man's Land, and Tempting Target _all on the same turn_). Most of the proxies made sense, though there's the odd weirdness like primaris units having 2+ saves but still only one wound. Other thoughts: Tanks felt super tough but otherwise weak unless you spend tons of points on upgrading the main guns, which was disappointing. 2k points definitely felt low. Psykers were more complex but pretty fun. The decision of whether to activate what you wanted or something that would probably die if you didn't activate it _right now_ really added some extra pressure that I enjoyed. RIP my Manticore that died first activation to a Scouted ATV with a Deadly (6) multimelta. Final Score: Imperial Guard 65 - Space Marines 78
