My car has the same compression ratio and asks for 87 AKI, which I believe is 91 RON. I have to give it 95 though because that's the lowest they sell here.

I think most people's goal is to one day own property so they can stop paying rent.
Paying rent to government is better than paying it to my horrible multitrillionaire landlord who has like 3 or 4 apartments or something and is using the income to focus on his music instead of working, but eventually I'd like to not pay rent to anyone, at all.

It's funny because even the salesmen have said "Oh you have to print occasionally just to make sure it doesn't dry and clog up" and yet our cheap-ass inkjets from well-hated companies have never given any such issues, even when they've been unused for years at a time. Over the span of 2 decades there's been 2 of them. Canon and then later HP.
Would I buy another one? Probably not. Would rather get a Brother laser with wi-fi support these days if there's ever need for a printer again. But I'm hoping that there won't be.

Outside of the US or at least outside of English, a Swiss Army Knife is known as a pocket knife, and they're not always Swiss-made either. As you can see from Victorinox's own website (and they are the official manufacturer of what Americans call the Swiss Army Knife - which, indeed, got famous because it was used by the Swiss army), they call it a Taschenmesser, where Tasche translates to pocket and... If you let perfect be the enemy of good, nothing ever gets done, because nothing is ever perfect right away.
This change is already happening, an EV now in most western countries is significantly cleaner than an ICE and like I said, an ICE is doomed to spew gases for the remainder of its lifetime whereas EVs keep getting because the grid keeps getting cleaner.
And even better, these statistics assume a 200k km lifetime for all cars. It tends to be much more than that, making the initial battery manufacturing even less impactful to the total CO2 production.

Yup, Biden must've realized that high oil prices are political suicide. Thing is, he should've realized it before making any promises. He might not have known beforehand that war would drive prices high, but he should've accounted for potential changes in the market, he's leading a country, not a student company.

We are transitioning towards it, but in the meantime, switching to EVs still reduces CO2 output and because the grid is getting cleaner, that means EVs get cleaner even after being manufactured and sold, whereas ICEs can only get cleaner through R&D and only get worse over time as they age (once they start burning oil, etc)

Anyone who's into cars would likely agree with a lot of what Fuckcars says.
I love driving! I want there to be fewer drivers on the road so I can enjoy it more. I don't want to sit in a traffic jam because everyone's forced to drive. And when I'm drinking alcohol, guess what, I'm not driving, I want to be able to walk home safely. That's of course just one reason to walk. Sometimes I just want to walk to the grocery store with my family for, y'know, the health benefits of walking.
And you know what? I live in Europe, I can do all this and that's why I like driving here. I don't wanna sit in an Interstate traffic jam lol

When I was like 20 or so and needed to drive every morning and it was -25C or colder outside, I'd go outside in my t-shirt, start the engine, remove the key (because the ignition lock was so worn, I could remove it), lock the car, go back inside
Woke me right up and afterwards when I went outside with proper winter clothing, I didn't feel the least bit cold. Plus the car had a nice big gasoline V6 as opposed to the diesels I mostly drive nowadays, so it actually did manage to defrost the windshield in <10 minutes no problem.

Yes yes I know, I could Google it or watch a YouTube video. But no, I want honest opinions from other people on what is, in my opinion, one of the last bastions of the old school Internet, where you'd get real opinions from real people. I loved the original, but never really played multiplayer - mostly because as a young'un I had no money, so I pirated it, but also because I just loved the campaign as well as experimenting with stuff that was never going to work as a multiplayer strategy. Do you guys feel it's worth the 30something euros it costs on Steam? That's not a lot of money, but more importantly, games take time to play and I have very little of it these days. And once I buy a game, I feel committed to play it.
I think many of us have noticed the trend that modern tech just... Doesn't make things better. There's little to be excited about, because anything even remotely innovative is going to be filled with tracking, ads, etc. Let's say you had a bored software engineer or 2 at your disposal and the goal was to improve something you do often, by creating an application or website that isn't owned and enshittified by a megacorp looking to extract maximum short term value - what would your project be? Is it something you'd be willing to pay for, maybe with a free tier available? The reason I'm asking is that I'm a software engineer and in the current hard-ass market, while I'm lucky enough to have a stable job, I know that experience alone isn't cutting it anymore in the recruitment process. You need to be able to show side projects too. Plus I have an unemployed software engineer friend who also has no interesting projects to show. So if we make any money out of it, that's awesome. If we don't, it's just something for our github accounts. Probably the latter. PS: Yes, I know this is not a tech community - I want ideas from regular, non-techy people too. PPS: This doesn't have to be something in your personal life, it could also be something that would help you at work if you had it.
Terve! I'm planning to visit the Moomin World with my family this summer. Since we're Estonian and coming via ferry, that involves driving from Helsinki to Naantali. However, I think that driving on a highway for the entirety of your road trip is a bad way to see a country and I'd much rather see the countryside. If it adds a few hours to the trip, so be it. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the issue of making excuses for everything. I don't just mean excusing your unfinished chores by saying "I have ADHD", I mean excuses and fabrications in general - at work, you might say you're nearly finished with a project, but really you're halfway done at best, at home you might say you couldn't start the dishwasher because of how angry your pregnant wife was at you for choosing the wrong program on the washing machine, so you were scared to start the dishwasher - fully ignoring the fact that you were supposed to start the dishwasher BEFORE even being confronted about the washing machine. The last one is a stupid example, but it happened an hour ago and it's a pattern I hate about myself. If you've had a similar issue and identified it, what has helped you improve yourself? I may never be perfect to the point I'll get everything done that I need to, but I'd like to at least stop making stupid excuses that just bring up fights that could've been avoided.

There was already a Gentoo community on Lemmy, however it hasn't had any activity in 2 years and since Lemmy's popularity has exploded in recent days, I figured it might be time for a new one with active moderation. Anyone reading this likely already knows what Gentoo is, but on the off-chance that someone completely unfamiliar with Gentoo clicks on this thread, here's a quick primer. [Gentoo Linux](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentoo_Linux) is essentially a meta-distribution. You're given a package manager ([Portage](https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Portage)) that builds your packages from source, and some useful command line utilities. Other than that, you get your choice of everything - systemd or OpenRC? X11 or Wayland? Gnome, KDE or some other desktop manager? Or none at all? All up to you. Now of course, Arch provides you the same freedom of choice, but Gentoo's party trick is the local compilation - you can have the compiler optimize everything for your particular CPU's instruction set, or just leave out features you don't need in some programs.
