You know Trump wanted to kill him, right?

I enjoy writing and reading critiques of American power (including yours!) on fora like this one, and I think these spaces are valuable for education, radicalization, and organization. I consider this an example of freedom of speech. I also think we risk losing these freedoms under Trump. Do you disagree?

There are reports that Trump, while president, wanted to shoot protestors. Reports say that Trump toned down his requests "after Attorney General William Barr and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley pushed back on his initial request." There are similar reports about McMaster and other chumps who reined in the absolute worst dogshit instincts of Trump.

I don't think these guys disagreed with Trump because they're good people with good values. I think they did it because they're authoritarians who got high on the pop Americana of Top Gun and Air Force One and believe America Is Freedom, and "You don't shoot people who are protesting*" is one of those freedoms. Or, at the very least, it's supposed to distinguish us from the international foes that these guys have always whined about.

(*Depending on who is protesting and what they even count as a protest. But I have been to dozens of protest marches, I was just at a Gaza march with thousands of people in New York, and I've never once worried about being shot for holding a sign and chanting.)

It's worth noting that a lot of these guys, like Milley, predated Trump's time in office. I think part of the reason Trump kept these guys around is because he straight-up sucks at hiring. This report highlights the difficulties of passing his loyalty test, but I recall another one (I can't find it now) that said that during the transition, the Trump team was shocked to learn that they had to hire hundreds of people. They thought everyone came with the office. Trump was so inexperienced at it that he ended up asking Obama for advice.

None of that is the case the second time around. The folks who stay on do it knowing what Trump wants, and knowing that he'll be empowered to get it. And unlike 2016, there's a plan. Project 2025 has been vetting people for civil service roles, and Schedule F means that Trump could effectively sideline or fire any civil servants who want to slow-walk his agenda. The Supreme Court has already given him the greenlight with the Trump v. U.S. ruling. And, just earlier today, Trump again spoke of deploying the military against his political foes. No one who is joining this administration is doing it because they have some Jerry Bruckheimer view of America's freedom. They all know the score this time around.

There's one more reason that Trump's hands were partially tied during his admin. Pema Levy at Mother Jones wrote about it in the context of January 6, but I think it applies to his administration generally:

Trump’s coup failed not because he and his allies lacked power, but because President Joe Biden’s margin of victory was big enough that some allies—including his own attorney general and most Senate Republicans—refused to use that power to illegally keep Trump in office.

Trump has never won a popular vote. If that were to change-- if he were to win the election by a majority, rather than just by picking up electoral votes in our shitty system-- then I can't think of a single thing that would stop Trump from getting everything he wants. The small measures of freedom that some people in this country have eked out (the right to form a union, or protest, or publish criticism of the government), the launching pad from which most of our other freedoms and liberties have advanced or been protected, would be totally wiped out, and there would be no one to stop it.

  • I think some leftist accelerationists believe that electing Trump will galvanize resistance the way it did 2017-2020. The ways that regular folks joined us, marched, and actually paid attention to things besides soccer practice was legit heartening and often helpful. I'm thinking about popular demonstrations against the migrant camps, organizing Covid relief and mutual aid, and generally saying "fuck this guy and his policies." But if Trump returns, none of that shit is going to happen. 1) Those would-be allies might conclude that all that resistance was for nothing, and give up. *Especially* if he wins an outright majority. 2) Trump is pretty open that he intends to use violence against his political opponents, and this time he likely won't be constrained by any sort of deep state. *Especially* if he wins an outright majority. That's my thinking, but any accelerationists want to tell me where I'm wrong?

How to get Zen-style vertical tabs in Firefox?

    I'm a heavy user of Firefox & Tree Style Tabs. Recently, I tried Zen Browser. There's a lot there to like, but I think I'm sticking with FF. *That said...* there is one thing from Zen I'd love to bring back to FF: That awesome collapsible sidebar for tabs. It's great: The sidebar is totally usable in its narrow, collapsed state (which only shows a vertical stack of favicons). But if I want to expand it, I just click a button and I can see the favicons + website names. I've tried to achieve the same thing in FF & TST with the CSS below, but it's not the same: This CSS creates a minimized sidebar that expands whenever I hover over it. That's not as useful as the behavior in Zen. In fact, it gets pretty annoying. Does anyone know how to get Zen-style vertical tabs? Thank you!! The CSS I'm currently using in FF: ``` /* Source file https://github.com/MrOtherGuy/firefox-csshacks/tree/master/chrome/autohide_sidebar.css made available under Mozilla Public License v. 2.0 See the above repository for updates as well as full license text. */ /* Show sidebar only when the cursor is over it */ /* The border controlling sidebar width will be removed so you'll need to modify these values to change width */ #sidebar-box { --uc-sidebar-width: 60px; --uc-sidebar-hover-width: 210px; --uc-autohide-sidebar-delay: 100ms; /* Wait 0.6s before hiding sidebar */ position: relative; min-width: var(--uc-sidebar-width) !important; width: var(--uc-sidebar-width) !important; max-width: var(--uc-sidebar-width) !important; z-index: 1; background-color: #110a0d !important; } #sidebar-box[positionend] { direction: rtl; } #sidebar-box[positionend] > * { direction: ltr; } #sidebar-box[positionend]:-moz-locale-dir(rtl) { direction: ltr; } #sidebar-box[positionend]:-moz-locale-dir(rtl) > * { direction: rtl; } #main-window[sizemode="fullscreen"] #sidebar-box { --uc-sidebar-width: 1px; } #sidebar-splitter { display: none; } #sidebar-header { overflow: hidden; /* color: var(--chrome-color, inherit) !important; */ padding-inline: 0 !important; } #sidebar-header::before, #sidebar-header::after { content: ""; display: flex; padding-left: 8px; } #sidebar-header, #sidebar { transition: min-width 115ms linear var(--uc-autohide-sidebar-delay) !important; min-width: var(--uc-sidebar-width) !important; will-change: min-width; } #sidebar-box:hover > #sidebar-header, #sidebar-box:hover > #sidebar { min-width: var(--uc-sidebar-hover-width) !important; transition-delay: 0ms !important; } .sidebar-panel { /* background-color: transparent !important; */ /* color: var(--newtab-text-primary-color) !important; */ } .sidebar-panel #search-box { -moz-appearance: none !important; /* background-color: rgba(249, 249, 250, 0.1) !important; */ color: inherit !important; } /* Add sidebar divider and give it background */ #sidebar, #sidebar-header { background-color: inherit !important; border-inline: 1px solid rgb(80, 80, 80); border-inline-width: 0px 1px; } #sidebar-box:not([positionend]) > :-moz-locale-dir(rtl), #sidebar-box[positionend] > * { border-inline-width: 1px 0px; } /* Move statuspanel to the other side when sidebar is hovered so it doesn't get covered by sidebar */ #sidebar-box:not([positionend]):hover ~ #appcontent #statuspanel { inset-inline: auto 0px !important; } #sidebar-box:not([positionend]):hover ~ #appcontent #statuspanel-label { margin-inline: 0px !important; border-left-style: solid !important; }```

When you do this, what do people say? Do they say "Open it!" or do they ever tell you what it is?

What is the point of wrapping the gift if you're just going to tell the person what's inside?

It might not be fair to say they don't give a shit. More often, I've found that productions simply hit a wall of time or money.

Just about anyone can write or edit a great story with enough time. But movies and shows are produced against a running clock, and they have obligations and limitations that go beyond the screenwriter's imagination or the editor's time. There are so many varied interests involved in a single production. Sometimes the issue is TOO many people giving a shit, and not being able to find a workable compromise in time.

  • The week before the election, we go into fash forums and start posting our "Election Day Fits" and it's all just pics of people in head-to-toe Trump gear, trying to convince fash to wear all their Trump stuff to the polls. Then, on Election Day, they get there and find that they're not allowed to enter the polling place bc they're wearing campaign gear. Is this anything?

Tbh I think the zine is more likely to get you in trouble. Many states ban any kind of campaigning within a certain distance of a polling place. But I don't think handing out "I Voted" stickers would qualify as campaigning. A zine, on the other hand ..

  • I have this weird plan to dissuade fascists from voting. It's totally legal and I kinda think it could work. 1) we buy rolls of "I Voted" stickers off Amazon 2) On Election Day, we go to polling places in swing states. Pick a district that's heavily fash, and with long lines. 3) As people line up outside, go down the line and hand out the stickers. People in line get frustrated by the wait, but they figure "I already have the sticker. I can post on social. Good enough." They go home without voting. 4) The fascists lose. I don't think this is totally nuts. And as long as it's just a generic "I Voted" sticker it's totally legal. What do y'all think?

Ok, this makes sense, thank you.

I'm now able to access my Jellyfin server from other devices in my home. (A browser on another machine, and an Apple TV with Swiftfin).

If I wanted to extend access to people outside my home, what's the best way?

    Thank you

New York has a great gallery scene, and every Thursday you can attend gallery openings. But finding out which galleries are hosting events can be a little archaic: The only sites that list openings are really old, and they don't offer any way to subscribe (say, via RSS). You know what would be great? A Google Calendar that's updated with all the best art gallery openings. For starters, it could source from these sites: - [ArtNet](https://www.artnet.com/events/new-york/gallery-openings/) - [NewYorkArtWorld](https://www.newyorkartworld.com/calendar/CurrentArtExhibitionsNow.html) - [ArtCards.CC](http://www.artcards.cc/) Can someone make this *please *so I can subscribe to it?

Can somebody make nonsense.nyc into a Google calendar?

There's a great newsletter called [nonsense nyc](http://nonsensenyc.com/) that lists great, off beat events for the coming week. But it's **only** available as a newsletter, which is kinda annoying. I'd love to have it as a Google Calendar. I could manually take the events from nonsense and add each one to my calendar, but that's a chore. Does anyone know a good way to automate it?

I've just started using Brave on Linux (distro info at bottom) and I have a question about keyboard shortcuts & how the browser manages active windows, because it seems to be doing something different from my last browser. I usually use Firefox, and I've set it up so that I can open a new tab with the Mail key on my keyboard. Pressing my Mail key executes this command, opening a new tab. ``` xdotool getactivewindow key ctrl+t ``` But now I've switched to Brave browser, and that command no longer works. When I've got Brave open and I press my Mail key, nothing happens. I've tried alternate commands: ``` xdotool key ctrl+t ``` and ``` xdotool getwindowfocus key ctrl+t ``` but no result. Does anyone know how to fix? What is Brave doing with its browser tabs/windows? Thank you! * Desktop: Linux Mint Xfce 4.18.1 * Distro: Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia * Ubuntu 22.04

Window controls moved in latest update

    For years, I've used a CSS trick to move my window controls (Minimize, Fullscreen, Close) from the Menu Bar into the lower toolbar, right beside my Overflow menu. (I'm on Windows 10, so these are the controls you see in the upper right window) But suddenly, that doesn't work. My window controls are back up in the Menu Bar. That's unfortunate, because I usually hide my Menu Bar. Can anyone review my code and tell me what needs to change? Thank you! ``` /* Move Window Control buttons to Nav Bar */ :root:is([tabsintitlebar], [sizemode="fullscreen"]) { --uc-window-control-width: 138px; /* Space reserved for window controls (Win10) */ /* Extra space reserved on both sides of the nav-bar to be able to drag the window */ --uc-window-drag-space-post: 30px; /* right side*/ } :root:is([tabsintitlebar][sizemode="maximized"], [sizemode="fullscreen"]) { --uc-window-drag-space-pre: 0px; /* Remove pre space */ } @media (-moz-platform: windows-win7), (-moz-platform: windows-win8), (-moz-os-version: windows-win7), (-moz-os-version: windows-win8){ :root:is([tabsintitlebar], [sizemode="fullscreen"]) { --uc-window-control-width: 105px; } } @media (-moz-gtk-csd-available) { :root:is([tabsintitlebar],[sizemode="fullscreen"]) { --uc-window-control-width: 84px; } } .titlebar-buttonbox, #window-controls{ color: var(--toolbar-color) } :root[sizemode="fullscreen"] .titlebar-buttonbox-container{ display: none } :root[sizemode="fullscreen"] #navigator-toolbox { position: relative; } :root[sizemode="fullscreen"] #TabsToolbar > .titlebar-buttonbox-container:last-child, :root[sizemode="fullscreen"] #window-controls{ position: absolute; display: flex; top: 0; right:0; height: 40px; } :root[sizemode="fullscreen"] #TabsToolbar > .titlebar-buttonbox-container:last-child, :root[uidensity="compact"][sizemode="fullscreen"] #window-controls{ height: 32px } #nav-bar{ border-inline: var(--uc-window-drag-space-pre,0px) solid var(--toolbar-bgcolor); border-inline-style: solid !important; border-right-width: calc(var(--uc-window-control-width,0px) + var(--uc-window-drag-space-post,0px)); } :root[tabsintitlebar]{ --uc-toolbar-height: 40px; } :root[tabsintitlebar][uidensity="compact"]{ --uc-toolbar-height: 32px } #TabsToolbar{ visibility: collapse !important } :root[sizemode="fullscreen"] #TabsToolbar > :is(#window-controls,.titlebar-buttonbox-container){ visibility: visible !important; z-index: 2; } :root:not([inFullscreen]) #nav-bar{ margin-top: calc(0px - var(--uc-toolbar-height,0px)); } :root[tabsintitlebar] #toolbar-menubar[autohide="true"]{ min-height: unset !important; height: var(--uc-toolbar-height,0px) !important; position: relative; } #toolbar-menubar[autohide="false"]{ margin-bottom: var(--uc-toolbar-height,0px) } :root[tabsintitlebar] #toolbar-menubar[autohide="true"] #main-menubar{ -moz-box-flex: 1; -moz-box-align: stretch; background-color: var(--toolbar-bgcolor,--toolbar-non-lwt-bgcolor); background-clip: padding-box; border-right: 30px solid transparent; border-image: linear-gradient(to left, transparent, var(--toolbar-bgcolor,--toolbar-non-lwt-bgcolor) 30px) 20 / 30px } #toolbar-menubar:not([inactive]){ z-index: 2 } #toolbar-menubar[autohide="true"][inactive] > #menubar-items { opacity: 0; pointer-events: none; margin-left: var(--uc-window-drag-space-pre,0px) } ```
